Camino Primitivo  & Camino Fisterra

Damon`s hiking in Spain

Without Bogdan I would still be someone who has never been hiking! I am now very happy I have finally experienced a hike and I have Bogdan to thank for it.

I completed the beginner level Camino Primitivo hike and ended up walking something like 450km over 19 days walking all the way from Oviedo to Santiago and then on to Fisterra and then Muxia.

Bogdan’s knowledge of the route and knowledge of the best Albergues maximized the enjoyment of the hike allowing my mind to focus on the beautiful scenery, having fun along the way and the occasional ice cold beer.

The clean air and nature you encounter on the Primitivo is amazing and probably my favorite day (of which there were many) was the famous Hospitales route. Perhaps the most physically challenging due to the sometimes rough terrain but the trek through the mountains is simply stunning. Me and Bogdan stopped for lunch atop a peak with the hot sun beaming down on us and Spanish imperial eagles flying overhead. It was breathtaking.

The strength of camaraderie was a factor I didn’t take into account before the start of the trip. Definitely the strongest element that made it so enjoyable for me. To enjoy such an adventure with so many other likeminded hikers was a very positive experience for me. You naturally see other people all the time, often the same people and as you are all focused on the same goal making friends is very easy, certainly compared to life outside of the Camino! I was lucky enough to spend some real quality time getting to know other people who I would now consider certainly as friends. Two of my fondest memories (again of which there are many) was watching the sunset at the lighthouse in Fisterra two nights in a row with people who I’d met on the way and felt quite close to at that point.

I am not a highly spiritual person but the Camino did have a healthy spiritual effect on me. For me the Camino is like a beautiful allegory for life itself: The journey is more important than the destination, people will come and go, some are truly awesome and will only make your journey better, fun and laughter is essential and you must enjoy every moment as much as you can.

If you have never tried anything like this before I highly recommend giving this a go. If you are anything like me you will love it.

Buen Camino!
